CATCHING UP WITH GRAYSKUL

We got a few words with Grayskul after their set at Bumbershoot to get an update on their new project “Dead Livers” coming out soon through Rhymesayers Entertainment, here’s what they had to say…

BELLY) I guess let’s start off with a brief history of you guys as far as making music is concerned.
JFK) Our crew is Oldominion, Grayskul is a movement within Oldomininon. We’ve been doing it for like 10 years now with Oldominion having around 20 members. Grayskul is a project we started a year or year and a half ago. Me & Onry started recording at ATB studios with El Topo, the Phantom Ghost. Grayskul’s been on a few tours now and Oldominion’s starting to tour more. I just got back from a nationwide tour, with myself, Sleep, Sirens Echo, Bishop I, Pale and Smoke and we’re about to go on another Oldominion tour with Grayskul, Nyqwil, Azreal and Barfly, it’ll be like a west coast thing. We’re from Seattle; we represent the Northwest. Oh yeah we also have a tour coming in December/January with Vast Aire.

BELLY) Talk a little about the album and how the deal with Rhymesayers came about.
JFK) We’ve actually recorded 2 albums already, we had a full album done before we signed with Rhymesayers. We had about 30 of the best songs picked out and set aside for the LP and released “Thee Adventures”, which you guys have got. That was exclusive tour only type shit. The next album we’ve got is “Dead Livers” coming out through Rhymesayers. How we got signed with Rhymesayers basically, our manager Wordsayer from Jasiri Media is really good friends with Saddiq and the other guy who owns Rhymesayers so he just presented our album and we got a phone call one morning like “Yo, Sadiq from Rhymesayers wants to pick your album up.” So we’re excited about the whole thing. We’re working on another album right now, an EP actually.
El TOPO) Creature!! It’s called Creature! I don’t know why we decided to do 55 songs in 8 months.

BELLY) So how’d you get involved with these 2?
El TOPO) I did some of the Grey Area, Onrys album that came out on BSI before that and he liked the way I worked, I worked really quick, we pumped some stuff out really quick so we said, “Hey let’s start a side project and it’s been on from there. What 40 songs in 8 months, 50 songs in 8 months.
El TOPO) Anyone who liked the Grey Area, Mr. Hill produced it, The new Grayskul shit, Mr. Hill produced almost all of it.

BELLY) You guys want to talk about the new Oldominion release “Negative One and a Half”
JFK) That’s some old shit. It’s really weird how we go backwards.
El TOPO) We don’t do new shit, we only do old shit.
JFK) We recorded it the same time that we did “One” basically it’s some of the songs that didn’t make “One” so we slapped it on another album and called it “Negative One and a Half”, the negatives. It’s the same kind of style, all the cats of Oldominion are on it, it’s a dope album. Oh yeah I also want to speak about the appearances on “Dead Livers” we got Canibus making an appearance, we got Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif and Abstract Rude on there, it’s a really good album.

Be on the lookout for “Dead Livers” dropping February next year as well as a 12” and Grayskul mixtape mixed by Mr. Dibbs coming sooner than that all on Rhymesayers Entertainment. Thanks to Mr. Hill for hooking the interview up, and Onry Ozzborn, JFK, and El Topo otherwise known as Grayskul.
