Featured Artist Sleep : Oldominion

With 2 new full length projects, (“Christopher" and his “Chicharones” project with Josh Martinez), two 12 inch releases all slated for the next two months, Sleep won’t be “Just chillin’ in his comfortable shoes” for much longer. If all goes according plan he’ll be making tracks across the globe with his one-off style and “welcome to my world” songwriting abilities.
"We, (Chicharones) don't want to be the lyrical miracle emcees or anything, we just want to make good songs."

Sleep started out rhyming at the age of 9 in New Mexico with crewmate Onry Ozzborn in local showcases and on street corners. A move in 1990 brought Sleep to the Pacific Northwest where he met Pale Soul and began performing with him around the region. Later, Sleep would go on to being a founding member of the groundbreaking Northwest Hip Hop crew Oldominion… That’s the past; this is the present.

"I've probably been inspired by every artist at least once positively or negatively..." Sighting influences such as Black Sheep, Hieroglyphics and Rakim seem like mandatory answers for many emcees, Sleep is sure to include timeless songwriters such as The Beatles and Paul Simon on his list of inspiring artists as well. "We, (Chicharones) don't want to be the lyrical miracle emcees or anything, we just want to make good songs." The importance of songwriting to Sleep is apparent when listening to Sleep's upcoming sophomore release "Christopher" due out May 31st on Up Above Records best known for their involvement with the Visionaries crew but more recently Jurassic 5, Living Legends and others.

The sound on “Christopher” is a tightly knit collection of songs with a very different approach from his critically acclaimed debut release "Riot by Candlelight" released on Under the Needle in 2002. "Christopher" tells stories, penned straight from Sleep's own experiences using his signature rapid-fire cadences over polished production choices from Vitamin D, Maker, Pale Soul, Smoke and others. Where "Riot" was a darker project whose composition was void of form, Christopher's sound is more along the lines of his "Chicharones" side project than his earlier Oldominion works. In his words, "There are some big differences between riot and Christopher. Riot was an experimental project for me. I wrote it under the premise that it would have no definitive structure. It dealt with the darker side of my art hence the name “Riot by Candlelight”.

I wrote the whole record to have a personal meaning to me that only I'd know... It has three little layers to it. It was structured to have non-structure. Chistopher is a more structured record and is mostly about the last two years of my life and also my past, it's kind of an autobiography album. I created it to sound nice to the ear, something that you wouldn't have to work on to like. I think that if you came to a sleep show and liked what you saw then Christopher won't disappoint you as where riot by candlelight might throw you off a little bit... With the new Chicharones album and the Christopher album I feel I have two really good albums that I'm really proud of. I never really expected Riot by Candlelight to come out. I was just making the album. Anticon was interested in it, I kind of wrote it with that in mind. I didn't know if they wanted to do it or not, I didn't know if I wanted to do it or not. I just didn't know. I was just making a whole bunch of songs."

Through a chance meeting at the last stop of the Anticonquistador tour in Seattle, Sleep met future friend and “Chicharones” collaborator Josh Martinez. "Sole of Anticon actually was the one who first told me about Josh. He has such a good ear. Sole said he wanted to make a 12", one side me, and one side this kid Josh Martinez. He knew way before I did. We just really click well. SXSW 2001 was the first time we hung out and had a few drinks and started talking about maybe doing a song together. He ended up coming down to my crib for a week and we recorded "Opposite of Fair"...

We ended up having a lot of fun and a lot of chemistry together. We did "Opposite of Fair" and I thought it was different than anything I'd ever done before. I liked the way our voices sounded together and I thought if we developed on it, we could really harmonize. He ended coming down another week and we pounded out the Boss Hoggs record on a 16 track in my room...We just really get along together good as humans. We'll bounce ideas off each other and have different qualities for making good songs. We have the same vision…to make good songs. We're working on our new record right now, we haven't named it or anything but it's almost done. We focused on just making songs. We did a lot of singing on this record. It's fun to be dorky together. I couldn't do it without Josh. He brought out that side of me. In nature, I'm just a dorky, mellow human being, kind of goofy, kind of incoherent or that's what it seems like sometimes. That's why they call me Sleep."

Under the Needle decided they couldn’t give Sleeps new project the push it deserved and gave the option to search for a new label. During the 2004 DMC finals in LA, Sleep heard Key Kool was filling his roster at Up Above. "He was there, I did the give you the demo CD thing. I told him I wouldn't have given him the CD if I thought it was a random CD I always get from whoever, I'm giving you this because I honestly think it's some of the best stuff I've ever done and I think this is some of the first music I've made that would be worthy of being looked at by a label. He called me back a few weeks later and said 2Mex thinks your album is really good. I consider him my peer and take what he says seriously so if he feels this way, I gotta take it seriously... 2Mex, I got so much love for him. He's one of the best humans in Hip Hop, they don't make people better than 2Mex. He’s a good man. He (Key Kool) said they wanted to do the album so at that point I had them get at my manager. I just want to work on music and understand music, but I trust Jasiri to do a good job on that end. I trust Wordsayer, he's an important figure in my life. I was caught up in negativity with my former management, Wordsayer showed me the real Hip Hop scene in Seattle."
Sleep is dropping his new solo full length album "Christopher" next Tuesday, May 31st on Up Above Records, and a new 12" for "Say Goodbye" b/w The Heat ft. Masta Ace from the new album the same day. The new Chicharones 12" entitled "Pork Rhind Disco" is out in select locations now and will be followed with a new Chicharones full length project in the coming months, release date TBA. "I'm soon to be working on a project with Qwel. I did a project with Qwel, 2Mex, Bishop I and Skratch Bastid, we did 5 songs, one of which was on 2Mex's album "Knowhawk", Skratch Bastid has one of the songs. Right now everything is up in the air on that one, no one knows for sure if it will ever come out. I also would like to do another "Aurora" with Onry. One other thing I want to mention is Josh and I need 2 things from anyone who want to contact us about this right now. We need investors, we have a lot of avenues, we have distribution, we're on Universal in Canada. We have a P&D with Universal, P&Ds are almost unheard of these days but we managed to secure one. I should say Josh managed to secure one cause he's good with that stuff. We need investors and internet assassins. When I say investors I mean someone who's willing to take a long-term investment, we need merchandise investments. We want to carry an array of things and we'll pay it back no problem. We sell a lot of stuff when we're on the road but we need capital to get the merch to sell." Hit them up at sleepofoldominion.com or joshmartinez.ca to make any offers...
